Bringing
you a new mp3 every
week! (or so...)
April 10, 2008: First Warm Day (ruff demo) -Well, it's 5pm, Thursday, April 10th, and I
just wrote this 2 hours ago, out walking m' damn dogs on the beach, and
I was in such a good mood, I figured I'd try to get this to you before
the weather started to suck again! (Hey, what's the world-wide Interweb
for if you don't use it?) Happy Thursday everybody!

Still
Available!
It's the
CTP

After a far-too-long hiatus of our acclaimed Railroad
of the Weak series,
in 2005 we were pleased to bring you the WORLD PREMIERE performance of
"Railroad! The Play",
written by SonicTrout recording artist / occasional CTP musician /
genius Pete Labonne,
performed by Chandler & Dinty,
with instrumental backing by the Chandler Travis Philharmonic
"Railroad!
The Play" [RRotW #14: live
at Harry's Blues Bar, Hyannis, MA, September 13, 2005]
In case you missed them, here are
several of our previous SotW
selections...March 5, 2008: Live at the Cutting Room- The Chandler Travis Philharmonic recorded live at the Cutting Room, NYC,
January 24th, 2008 by Chip Valentino - I thought it might be fun to
give yez all a big chunk from one night, the better to convey the CTP
experience, and this was a swell one, splitting the bill with the
loverly Kami Lyle (always a favorite!), who also sat in with the band on
trumpet and sangin'. Having Art Baron, a particularly fast friend from
way back in college days who went on to have a staggeringly illustrious
career (but only if you think it's exciting to play with Duke Ellington,
Stevie Wonder, James Taylor, and Bruce Springsteen -not to mention
Travis & Shook, of course...) back on 'bone didn't hurt anything either.
Kami and Art are both seriously cracked, and it was a particular
pleasure to watch the intermingle-ization (both were in rare form.)
I only put in the second half of "This is Home", because it was the
first song and it took a couple minutes to get the mix up to speed, as
you might expect with a ten piece band with no sound check (luckily,
Chip, the Cutting Room's sound guy, turned out to be a genius.) Please
enjoy my many screw-ups, which include numerous lyrical errors, not to
mention playing almost a whole verse of "All My Good Luck Is Gone" a
half step sharp (so smooth!) This is also the first (vastly premature)
appearance of a new Travis-Greenberger composition, "Calling Me Back
Home", that I'm entirely infatuated with... I know we'll get it eventually.
The fact that I can get this ridiculously talented and delightful
assortment of musicians to keep playing my music in far away locales
like the Big Apple is absolutely stunning to me, and pretty much
eliminates the possibility of ever quitting, just because I can't wait
to see what they'll come up with next. In this instance, the geniuses
involved (and to whom I am well beyond grateful) are: Rikki Bates on
drums, John Styklunas on string bass, Dinty Child on mandocello,
accordion, and vox, Phil Clements on keys, and Fred Boak the Valet on
vox, plus our horn section, the June Trailer Dancers: Dan Brantigan and
Kami Lyle on trumpets, Art Baron on trombone, and leader Mark Chenevert
on tenor sax and clarinet.
The songs (written by myself, except as noted):
1. This is Home, Part 2 (Travis-Greenberger)
2. All My Good Luck Is Gone
3. Ticky Don't Do That
4. Calling Me Back Home (Travis-Greenberger)
5. Mid-morning in Moscow
6. Sha La La (Lover's Heart)
7. King of the Road (Roger Miller)
8. Where's My Glasses
9. Rikki Bates (Philharmonic) / Bob What's-is-name
November 21, 2007: " Poor Poor Beautiful Girls", recorded live at the Midway, Nov. 9th, '07 -a
recent ditty about something all us beautiful people can relate to. October 5, 2007 - For today's Song(s) of the Weak, we're featuring a couple of
Philharmonette numbers in particularly rough, early versions (which I
know I'll regret having put out already later, when we start getting
better ones):
" Tomatohead Blues" -recorded at Bubala's, August 9, '07 -Just wanted to
try to write something that sounded like Ellington's Jungle Band from
the late 20's and early 30's; of course, it's not anywhere near as
elegant as all that, but, hey, nothing else is, either. Note fab
trumpet solo by one Keiichi Hashimoto, magically returned to the fold
for a few gigs last summer -a happy event indeed! -not to mention a fine
solo by Ted DeColo, who happened to be sitting in on clarinet that
night, gawd luv 'im...
" What's Buggin' You" -Chandler Travis & The Guys Who Play With Chandler
Travis Sometimes, recorded at the Coast in Orleans, May 2, '07 -an even
rougher version of a song I was sure would be perfect for one of my
stupid bands, that worked out for neither of them (I had trouble
conveying some of the rhythms to the Philharmonette via chord charts,
and the Casuals -oh my god, don't get me started...) Ah, but life is
long, and I am a hound and a half. Some nice bass work from Laird Boles,
who was debuting with us that night, and pianer from (Mahavishnu John
Casual aka the Flaw aka) Keith Spring -MIA lately, dammit (-YOU talk to
him!)
January 26, 2007: " Last
Thing I Needed" - Chandler Travis & Modern Maturity,
recorded at Passim, January 19, 2007, board mix by Matt Smith I've
always loved the songs of Burt Bacharach & Hal David (esp. early
Dionne Warwick: "Don't Make Me Over" and "Walk On By" both still kill
me.) This one is sort of a mirror image to the Carpenters' "Close To
You" (lyrically more along the lines of "Far From Me", really); we just
started recording a studio version of it a week ago or so, and look
forward to finishing it in plenty of time for the apocalypse.
By
the way, this gig, Modern Maturity's Boston-area debut, was big-time
fun- hope to do more soon...
